The Saints teams and families traveled to Spring, Texas for the annual CHSM Invitational tournament held at The Competitive Edge gym.
All three teams were entered into pool play on the first day and bracket play on the second.
Middle School
A combined Middle School Team (both A and B teams) started the first day playing Brazos Valley JH. This team proved too much for our girls and they dropped two sets 16-25 and 9-25. The Saints rebounded and faced the HHA JH team winning both sets 28-26 and 25-14. This win put the Saints into the Silver bracket for day two.
The first match of bracket play was against River Oaks. The Saints lost two straight sets with scores of 20-25 and 18-25. The last match of the Middle School team’s first tournament of the year was against Aggieland JH-A. This was a close contest with split first sets 23-25 and 25-12. A final set settled the match coming down to a score of 14-16.
Middle School finished 8th out of 12 teams.
Middle School head Coach David Roseberry had a lot of praise for his team after the tournament.
“I always enjoy going to this tournament. They put together a great bunch of teams and elite level referees. I’m so proud of how the Middle School girls played this weekend. I received accolades from refs and other coaches on their play and attitudes.
I appreciate the other Saints coaches and Saints leadership of the Saints organization for watching and supporting when they could. They didn’t hesitate to jump in to give constructive thoughts, ideas, and help when needed.
Thank you to the parents who jumped out there to call lines for the first time. Thank you to the parents for getting the girls there this weekend and getting involved in all the activities and bonding that we did as teams and organization wide. Looking forward to the rest of the season. Go Saints!”
Junior Varsity
The Junior Varsity entered the tournament of 20 teams in Pool 2.
The first match was a two set 25-17, 25-13 victory over Covenant Academy. The second match versus Kinkaid JV Gold got even better with the Saints posting scores of 25-16 and 25-3.
The final match of pool play was a victory over CHSA JV 25-5 and 25-15.
The first day was a stellar outing with the JV winning six straight sets and finishing pool play undefeated and first in their pool and placing them into the Gold bracket.
The second day of the tournament brought challenges and competition with it. The first match of the day was versus a tough Aggieland JV-A team. The Saints kept it close, but fell in both sets 19-25 and 18-25.
The last match of the tournament was on Court 1 and pitted the Saints vs the Concordia JV team. The Saints dropped the first set 16-25, but dug deep to wrestle the second set away from Concordia 25-21 to force a final set.
In the third set the Saints were not able to continue the momentum of the second set and saw Concordia jump out to a 9-1 lead on their way to a 15-7 victory.
The JV placed 5th out of
Varsity
The first day of pool play started off with a bang as the Varsity won two fast sets against CHSA 25-9 and 25-8. The Saints continued rolling through the second match versus Houston Christian. The match was a close one with the Saints notching two more set victories with matching 25-21 scores. The Saints ended pool play with 4 set victories and 2 losses, but that was enough to get them into the Gold Bracket.
The second day of the tournament started out on the right foot with the Saints winning against a determined Duchesne team 25-23, 25-16. The afternoon looked to be going well, but then the challenge of beating the same team twice in one tournament crept up. The Saints found themselves playing Houston Chrisitan again and after dropping the first set 18-25 were able to force a third set 25-17. A third set win and a spot in the gold match wasn’t meant to be as the Saints dropped the final set of the tournament 10-15.
This was still a great tournament performance by the Varsity team as they placed 3rd out of 20 teams.
All teams will make a quick drive back to San Antonio and rest up for their next scheduled action Monday versus Great Hearts Northern Oaks.
